SPOT REAL LEATHER
🧐 How to Tell the Difference Between Genuine Leather and Faux Leather
In today’s market, leather is everywhere — but not all leather is authentic. Many brands sell synthetic leather (also known as PU or faux leather) disguised as the real thing. And to the untrained eye, it can be hard to spot the difference.
At L&B, we’re committed to authentic craftsmanship, and we want you to shop confidently. Here’s how to know whether you're holding genuine leather or just a convincing imitation.
1. Look Closely at the Texture and Pattern
Real leather is natural, which means it comes with imperfections, grain variation, and texture that aren't perfectly uniform. You might see subtle scars, pores, or creases — all signs of authenticity.
Faux leather, on the other hand, often looks too perfect. The grain pattern is consistent, the surface unnaturally smooth, and it lacks the character that comes from natural hides. That flawless finish is your first red flag.
2. Smell Test — The Easiest Clue
Authentic leather smells like... leather. It has a distinct, rich, earthy aroma that can't be duplicated. That unique scent comes from the tanning process and natural hide oils.
Faux leather usually smells like plastic or chemicals, thanks to the synthetic materials (like polyurethane) used to make it. If it smells artificial, it probably is.
3. Feel the Surface and Flexibility
Run your fingers over the leather. Real leather feels warm, soft, and grainy, and it should react to touch. When pressed, genuine leather will stretch or wrinkle slightly, just like skin.
Faux leather feels cold and smooth to the touch, and when you press into it, it typically compresses but doesn't stretch or crease. That lack of elasticity is a giveaway.
4. Check the Edges
Look at the edges of the product. Real leather tends to have rough, fibrous edges, while faux leather usually has clean-cut, plastic-like sides because it’s machine-made.
5. Price Tag Alone Isn't a Guarantee
Although genuine leather is generally more expensive, some high-quality faux leather products are also sold at premium prices, especially in fashion or branded markets. Always combine price checks with physical inspection for better accuracy.
💼 Why It Matters
Knowing the difference means you’re getting the value you pay for. Real leather is stronger, longer-lasting, and becomes more beautiful with age. At L&B, we stand behind every product with full confidence that you're buying the real thing — nothing less.
